Kayak the Davis Canal and explore marsh ecology and birding.
Join Oak Island Parks & Recreation for a warm, breezy morning exploring the natural wonders abounding in Davis Canal. We will watch the marsh habitat come to life during this time of year when babies are born and food is plentiful. Enjoying a leisurely paddle down the canal; we will hear and see birds nesting and singing, observe fish species, learn and identify species, and discuss the ecology of the marsh and its interconnectedness to the beach.
Single and tandem kayak rentals are available in limited supply. Please bring water, wear appropriate clothing (we all will get wet to some degree), sun protection, bug protection, binoculars if you have them, and a sense of curiosity. We will depart at 8:00 a.m. sharp from the Oak Island Recreation Center kayak launch so please arrive by 7:30 a.m.

The Southport Waterfront Market is held every Wednesday morning (weather permitting) from May through the August.  The location on the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn overlooking the Cape Fear River is a treat itself.  Browse the beautiful local produce, baked goods, and handcrafted items spread under ancient live oak trees.  Enjoy the breeze off the river and music in the air as entertainment is always available.

Howl at the Moon

Join an island tradition and the largest beach party each month when the full moon rises out of the Atlantic Ocean. The “Howl” party (as it’s called by the locals) happens on East Beach Access 39 when the Moon rises and the entire group breaks into a collectve “howl!” around a blazing bonfire.  Attendees bring food and drink to share and the Maritime Market brings huge pots of soup and some appetizers as well. After the Howl, head up to Mojo’s for their “moonrise to Midnight” bash – a moonlit post-Howl extravaganza on the porch.

The event draws hundreds each Summer and is free and open to all.

Begin the day with a $5 pancake breakfast from 8:30 – 11 a.m. and enjoy hot dogs, burgers, chips and drinks for purchase after noon.

NatureFest Southport is a day of nature, education, and fun on April 28, 2018

This event will be held in several locations throughout downtown Southport, as well as excursions to other areas.

  • 7:30 a.m. – Kayaking on Cottage Creek
  • 8:00 a.m. – Bird Walk in downtown Southport
  • 8:30 a.m. – Bus leaves for Green Swamp Preserve with guide Dr. Roger Shew
  • 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Plant sale and educational presentations about bats and bees in Franklin Square Park
  • 10:00 a.m. – Birding Boat Tour
  • Lunch break at restaurants and coffee venues in Southport
  • 1:30 p.m. Flight of the Butterflies documentary at Southport Baptist Church CMC
  • 3:00 p.m. The Cape Fear River, its Beauty and its Challenges lecture presentation by Cape Fear Riverkeeper Kemp Burdette at Southport Baptist Church CMC

Her song “Let the Wind Chase You”, recorded by Trisha Yearwood and Keith Urban, received a Grammy nomination.

The Friday, May 6, 2016 concert features Angela Easterling, a three-time Kerrville New Folk Finalist, a Telluride Troubadour Finalist and a two-time Wildflower Performing Songwriter Finalist. The Boston Herald named her song “The Picture” as the “Best Political Country Song” in their Year’s Best Music. Roger McGuinn, of the Byrds called her “a bright shining star on the horizon.” Angela released her 5th album, “Common Law Wife” in August, 2015.
